Description

Visited the Isle of May on 26th June. Saw lots of Puffins hanging around with sand eels and fish in their mouths. Why do they hang around like that? Surely they should be feeding their young?

They are likely hanging about because they are reluctant to go to their burrows while there is a threat present. They see humans as a treat.
I see this frequently when people are close to nest sites. The Puffins will wheel overhead and the bravest dive unceremoniously into their holes.
People think that puffins are unafraid, even tame. In truth, they simply tolerate people while remaining on high alert.
